Ballroom Basics: Rumba & East Coast Swing

A six-week beginner series with Elizabeth Converse of Lavender Ballroom Dance

Build on the skills you're learning or start from scratch, this class is for you!

If you've always wanted to dance but weren't sure you could, this is the place to start. You don't need to know anything because we start at the beginning. You don't need a partner because we rotate partners in class. You don't need special gear, just carry in clean, dry shoes so we protect the wood floor.

This round we learn Rumba and East Coast Swing. Rumba is a smooth, romantic Latin dance with an easy sway. East Coast Swing is lively, playful, and built for upbeat music. Over 6 weeks we go from the basic step to being able to dance a full song in each dance, with weekly handouts and follow-up emails with YouTube links to help you practice.

✨ What to Expect

Class size is limited so everyone gets some personal attention and no one gets lost in the crowd. Lead and follow are non-gendered, so choose the side that suits you best. Partners rotate in class.

💛 Who It's For

Brand new dancers, returning dancers, and anyone who wants a friendly place to learn. If you've danced before and need to brush up or expand your dance knowledge, starting from the beginning gives you the chance to review what you remember and refine what may have gotten rusty. No partner and no experience needed.

👟 What to Bring

Comfortable clothes you can move in, a water bottle, and a separate pair of clean, dry indoor shoes to change into so we can protect the wood floor. No special dance shoes required.

📅 Dates: Thursdays, November 5, 12, 19, December 3, 10, and 17, 2026 (no class Thanksgiving week)

⏰ Time: 6:00 to 7:00 PM (please arrive by 5:45 PM to check in and change shoes)

💵 Price: $150 for the full series | $30 drop-in (drop-ins available for the first two classes only, Nov 5 and Nov 12)

📍 Location: Sadie Jane Dance Complex, second-floor ballroom at 2 Pleasant Street, downtown Brunswick, Maine

🚗 Parking

Street parking is available on Maine Street, Pleasant Street, and nearby downtown streets. Please follow posted signs and time limits. If street parking is full, all-day public parking is available in the rear four rows of the Bank Street Municipal Lot.

🚪 Standard Entrance

Enter through the Pleasant Street doors and take the stairs to the second-floor ballroom.

♿ Accessible Entrance

The accessible ramp and elevator entrance are on the back side of the building. Follow the ramp to the landing at the top of the exterior stairs, enter the building from that landing, and take the elevator to the second-floor ballroom.
